Setting up Your RFID Device - Zebra RFD8500

 
Summary

This section contains setup information for using Zebra RFD8500 UHF (RAIN) RFID reader with TagMatiks AT Lite.

Pre-requisites
  • RFD8500 Reader should be sufficiently charged.
  • Android device should be sufficiently charged.
  • Bluetooth of Android device should be ON.
  • Android should be kept near to the RFD8500 reader.

A. Device Information

The RFD8500 RFID sled handheld reader is designed to empower mobile devices, tablets and smart phones with enterprise-class UHF RFID and 1D/2D barcode scanning technology. Using Bluetooth connection, the application on the smartphone/laptop/tablet would control the RFD8500 reader to perform RFID tag reading or Barcode scanning. The data will be collected in the smartphone or laptop/tablet and then can be transferred to other applications for further processing. Users can read tags and scan barcodes faster and with ease, improving productivity, operational efficiency.

The 2D barcode module is located at the top and the RFID reader module is in the front, with a forward-facing antenna. Below image shows the different views of RFD8500 device along with its terminals & indicators.

On the sled handle, there is a trigger used by the operator to start and stop the reading of RFID tags or Barcodes.

The description of the numbers marked with blue color - in previous image is as follows

B. Switching ON & OFF RFD8500 Device

I. Switching ON the RFD8500 Device

1. Press the Main Power button continuously for 3 seconds only.

2. Then its LED lights up GREEN meaning power is on.

II. Switching OFF the RFD8500 Device

1. To switch off when the RFD8500 reader is on, press the Main Power button continuously for 3 seconds only.

2. Then its GREEN LED light is off, meaning the RFD8500 device is powered off.

C. Pairing of RFD8500 Device with Android device using TagMatiks AT Lite Application

Immediately after when the RFD8500 device is power on, the “Bluetooth Pairing” LED light will automatically start flashing Blue – this indicates that RFD8500 device is now in discoverable mode and ready to pair with a nearby Android device.

1. Open the TagMatiks AT Lite application and login into it.

2. On the Home Page, click on the Settings Icon (at the bottom right side of screen); as shown below[figure 06]

3. To make the connection with the RFD8500 reader; press the “Manage Reader” button on the left-hand side of application (highlighted in red color).

NOTE: Make sure the Android device’s Bluetooth must be on.

4. Then multiple RFID reader options will come on the display.

5. Select “ZEBRA RFID Readers” (highlighted in red).

6. Then a new window will open, named: “Readers List.”

7. Bring the RFD8500 reader close to the Android device.

8. Application will show the discoverable reader’s name; as shown below [figure 09]

9. The reader’s name will be “RFD8500XXXXXXXXXXXXXX”; where “XXXXXXXXXXXXXX” is the 14 digit value of the device's serial number.

10. E.g. In the above image, the value “17114523020247” is the 14 digit value of the device's serial number.

11. The MAC address of the Zebra device is also reflecting. Here the device’s MAC address is B0:B4:48:08:00:4C

Note:

When no RFD8500 reader is there nearby the Android device
OR
If the Bluetooth of RFD8500 reader is Off
OR
RFD8500 Reader is not in pairing mode.
OR
RFD8500 Reader is already paired with another Android/iOS device.

then the application will show “No Available Readers.”

12. Now press on the available Reader name.

13. Once you press on the reader's name, then the application will start making a connection with the RFD8500 device.

14. On successful connection, an acknowledgment/pop window will come – stating that” RFD850017114523020247 has connected successfully”; refer below image [figure 12]

15. Application will also fetch the Model & Serial number of connected RFD8500 device and show it along with the reader’s name; as shown in above image [figure 12].

D. Reading RFID Tags using RFD8500 Device

In TagMatiks AT Lite, please first ensure the configuration settings are in sync with the RFID tags.

1. Please click on the Settings Tab and then click on the “Configuration” under “Admin Settings”

2. Please click on “Asset Configuration” under Asset Tag Format

3. A new window will open, where you can see tabs for Tagging Options, EPC Data and Other Memory Banks. As shown below

4. To modify the behaviour of associating RFID tags to assets; please read the article named:"Configured Overview"

5. Once the tag format configuration is properly saved; go to “Home” page

6. To read the RFID tags from the RFD8500 reader; press the “Inventory” button on the bottom left-hand side of application.

7. Then a new window will open, named: “Inventory.”

8. For taking the inventory, click on a Location; for example, here it is “San Francisco".

9. Press the “Start” icon bar button on the AT Lite application, then the RFD8500 reader will start reading the RFID tags. Please refer to the image below:

10. Once you Press the “Stop” icon bar button on the application; then the ZEBRA reader will stop reading the tags.

11. As a result, the read tag will populate on the application window, as shown in below image [figure 17].
